COWS DRINK URINE INSTEAD OF WATER
Several measurements of the water in a barn at slaughter show that the water is completely clean. Yet the cows choose to drink urine instead.
75 DAIRY COWS WON'T DRINK WATER
If. THE ENGINEER , some of the cows at farmer Søren Olsen's will only drink the water in their barn out of necessity.
The fact that cows don't want to drink their water is nothing new. Many farmers struggle with stray currents – small leakage currents that can run into the metal parts of the barn and bother the animals, who are more sensitive to this kind of thing than humans. But at Søren Olsen, the installations have been checked to the letter. Esben Larsen, DTU associate professor, has measured them crosswise without finding a single problem. The Danish Agricultural Organization, Seges, has also checked for bacteria, pH value, conductivity, minerals and heavy metals. Nothing to note – the water should be drinkable for both animals and humans. Yet Søren Olsen's 75 dairy cows refuse and prefer urine from the floor instead.
To be sure that there is nothing wrong with Søren Olsen's cows, a blind test of the water has been carried out.
The blind test was carried out by veterinarians Nynne Capion and Kirstin Dahl Pedersen and a group of students. The water came from one of four neutral pallet tanks, while the other three contained water from a building between Søren's own farm and Ørslev Waterworks, directly from the waterworks and from a completely different waterworks. Nynne Capion and Kirstin Dahl Pedersen were unaware of which water was in which tanks. All the "test" cows received all types of water on different days, and the result was crystal clear. "It clearly seemed that the cows did not think that the water in the four tanks was the same," says Kirstin Dahl Pedersen. A cow normally drinks by lowering its muzzle into the water and sucking. But with the water, which later turned out to be from Søren's farm, they behaved, according to the veterinarians, in a cat-like manner and licked it up with their tongues. The cows were not as happy with the other two taps from Ørslev Waterworks as they were with Taastrup water. “They drank and drank and drank when we opened our own water,” says Kirstin Dahl Pedersen. The researchers and their students have also tried drinking the water from Søren Olsen's farm. And they could both taste and feel the difference! “It felt like sticking your hands in lazy sparkling water. Very strange,” says Nynne Capion.
DON'T GIVE UP
Søren Olsen has contacted his electricity company Cerius many times. Among other things, he believes that the water may be affected by the company's 10 kV cable, which runs alongside the water main. According to department manager Jesper Bruhn Thomsen, the electricity company has spent around 300 hours trying to remedy the problem – without success. Among the measures has been to completely disconnect the 10 kV cable, and Søren Olsen has had his own generator for a week – and thus not been connected to the public electricity grid. ''We have many similar farms connected to our grid in our supply area, so we wanted to find out if anything points to us as the cause of the problems,'' says Jesper Bruhn Thomsen. However, all attempts to remedy the problem have ended without success. ''That's why we have said that now we have done what we can. If new knowledge comes to light, we will of course look at the matter again,'' says the department manager.
LAGUR might be the solution
For the agricultural organization Seges, however, the digging work to find the cause is far from over. Construction manager Kenneth Poulsen from the organization began a new project at the turn of the year to solve the mystery. ''There are an incredible number of factors that affect the behavior of livestock. We proceed systematically and take one thing at a time. We start inside the properties and work our way out,'' he says.
Søren's cows now get water from a new waterworks, which his cows happily drink – but only if it hasn't been through his own water supply and installation.
We have installed LAGUR on another farmer's pipe, who has the same problems as Søren, and is now waiting for an answer to see if it has a positive effect on his dairy cows.
