DAMAGES ONE water softening plants YOUR DRINKING WATER?

If you have had a water softening plants installed, it was most likely done with the belief that it would improve your drinking water. Unfortunately, it often reduces the quality of the drinking water with an increased risk of harmful substances and bacteria, several drinking water experts warn.

PRESERVE OUR DRINKING WATER AS YOU KNOW IT – AVOID CHEMISTRY!

If. Poltiken.dk requires chemical water treatment ( water softening plants ) a lot of maintenance if it is not to significantly degrade the drinking water.

This is because many of the water softening plants , which are installed in private homes, among other things, remove beneficial minerals from the water, and must be maintained regularly if they are not to end up as living bacteria bombs and add unwanted chemicals to the water, warns professor at DTU Environment, Hans-Jørgen Albrechtsen.

"We have some waterworks where professional employees keep track of the processes every day and ensure the water quality. But when private households install their own systems, they risk making the water worse, and then we have left it to 6 million consumers to fiddle around with the quality of their drinking water themselves. It is fundamentally a bad idea," says Hans-Jørgen Albrechtsen to politiken.dk.

WATER WORKERS' ASSOCIATIONS ARE CONCERNED

"We check the drinking water both at the plants and in the pipeline network, but we don't go into consumers' homes and test it at the tap. If customers set up something where they treat their own water, they have to pay close attention to the operation and maintenance of their system, because we don't notice if something is wrong. We don't know who has a water softening plants ", says press officer at Hofor, Astrid Skov, to politiken.dk.

water softening plants have previously been illegal

The Danish Transport, Building and Housing Authority opened on July 1, 2016 to approve water softening plants with German, Dutch and Swedish approvals, says Leon Buhl, engineer in the Energy and Climate division at the Danish Technological Institute.

"PREVIOUSLY, THEY WERE AFRAID OF AFFECTING THE QUALITY OF DRINKING WATER, BUT IN 2016 IT WAS POLITICALLY DECIDED THAT IT WOULD NOT BE AFFECTED THAT MUCH," he tells politiken.dk.

Pipes benefit from a little limescale

"It's a good argument that you don't have to clean the bathroom so much, while the disadvantages are very technical to explain," says Birger T. Christiansen from the installers' trade organization, Tekniq, to politiken.dk.

"If pipes corrode, they can release metals from the pipes into the water. And if the water from the waterworks changes, it is up to the owner to ensure that the system is adjusted correctly," says Birger T. Christiansen.

He warns that pipes can corrode if the amount of limescale in the water is too low.
