WHEN TERMINATOR SAID NO TO water softening
As governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger gave local environmental authorities the power to ban private salt-based water softening plants to protect the environment.
CALIFORNIA LEFT
He is probably best known as the violent android Terminator, but even during his time as governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger was a man of action.
For example, in 2009 he became a pioneer in a trend where more and more American cities are banning water softening of water with salt.
This happened when California passed a law that gave local environmental authorities the right to ban salt-based water softening of ordinary household and drinking water.
GO OUT IN THE AUTUMN
The law was a result of environmental concerns in California.
Salt-based water softening takes place through an ion exchange process where calcium and magnesium in the water are replaced by sodium (salt). The excess sodium ends up in the wastewater and is then discharged into the environment.
In California, it was estimated that large areas of agricultural land were negatively affected by excessive levels of sodium, reducing soil fertility, affecting crop yields, and leading to economic losses for agriculture.
Another problem was that many California cities' wastewater treatment plants were not equipped to remove the salts from the wastewater.
MORE FOLLOWED TROOPS
After Arnold Schwarzenegger signed the law, several California counties passed local ordinances that either restricted or banned the use of salt-based water softening plants .
Other American cities then followed suit.
Today, there are restrictions on the use of, among other things, water softening plants and private discharge of salt into wastewater in parts of Texas, Michigan, and Connecticut.
