MANY AMERICANS AFFECTED

It's a sure thing in the Danish media when the water from one of Denmark's many local waterworks is suddenly affected by pollution. We are still so spoiled in our latitudes with clean and natural drinking water.

Once our normal state is restored, we can put our mouth or glass to running water from the tap and drink as much as we can without worrying in the slightest about whether the water contains anything that shouldn't be there.

Americans – and most other inhabitants of the world – are not so lucky.

In the United States, new measurements indicate that the contamination of drinking water with man-made and non-degradable chemical substances – the so-called PFAS or in Danish: perfluoroalkyl compounds – is allegedly much greater than previously assumed .

This is what the environmental organization Environmental Working Group (EWG) believes after finding some of the highest PFAS levels in Miami, Philadelphia and New Orleans.

In 2018, EWG estimated, based on unpublished data from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), that the groundwater of 110 million Americans was contaminated with various PFAS compounds.

According to the EWG, the new findings indicate that many more Americans are living with contaminated groundwater.

ONLY ONE PLACE WITHOUT PFAS

EWG took water samples from 44 locations in 31 states, and only in the city of Meridian, Mississippi, where the water comes from sources more than 200 meters underground, were there no traces of PFAS.

Only in Seattle and Tuscaloosa, Alabama, did EWG find PFAS levels below the limit that EWG itself recommends. 34 of the places where EWF found PFAS are not registered with the authorities.

PFAS are used, for example, in the production of Teflon, the cleaning agent Scotchguard and fire-fighting foam. PFAS are linked to liver damage, kidney damage, cancer, birth defects and hormonal disruptions, among other things.

WATER WITHOUT CHEMISTRY

In 2014, a study by the Danish Environmental Protection Agency concluded that PFAS could be found in groundwater near fire drill sites and Denmark's relatively few carpet factories.

However, the project did not assess whether the PFAS compounds posed a risk to groundwater used for drinking water.
